Matru Puja

Matru Puja - a large turnout

On 12 August 2002, pujas were conducted by the youth to their parents (Matru Puja). Thus an old tradition, not practised so often nowadays, was revived: children - mainly teenagers - ritually washed their parents' feet. Just as, whenever our Mother enters a programme site, Her children wash Her Feet to show their reverence for Her.

All over India, boys and girls expressed their reverence for their parents by performing a similar ritual involving their own mothers and fathers.

Feeding Mother

This reverence is intended to reach beyond the biological parents. The youngsters are meant to recognise that a person is not only the offspring of a father and mother but also the child of his or her family line and culture, and to feel respect for the fore-bearers This maha yagna aims to check the moral and cultural degeneration of the present times by awakening the youth power and to help relieve suffering due to national calamities, poverty, insurgency and sectarianism.
