Balakendram

Amma and kids

Balakendrams or children's' satsangs are small units of about 10 to 15 children. They meet once a week or in some places once a month. Typically a Balakendram session would last about one and a half hours. A session normally starts with the chanting of mantras followed by meditation, archana, a storytelling session and finally a talk on topics like helping the needy or having respect and gratitude towards one's parents. Finally some bhajans are sung and then it's time for prasad (consecrated food offerings, normally sweets).

Br. Manoj, currently posted in Kozhikode, in Kerala, says: "We've about nine units. The children are really interested in coming because of the happy and jolly atmosphere. The children really accept and put into practice the moral lessons embedded in the stories.

The sessions are conducted under the guidance of some sincere volunteers either in a temple or a devotee's home. Most of the parents are very happy with the behaviour of the children. In some places the kids also engage in social-service activities like cleaning."
