Mangal, Rahu & Sani puja

Waving the oil lamps

Amma says that the subtle aura surrounding our body, which is normally golden in colour, becomes dull and black during bad times. The lighted oil lamp is waved around the body to purify the aura. The betel leaf with the arecanut is offered to the Divine. This is a symbolic offering of all our worries and problems at the feet of the Divine.

The incense stick is lit with this prayer: "May our lives be like this incense stick - spreading fragrance until the very end (being of some use to our fellow beings till our last breath.)"

Chanting the names of Mangal

Mangal Puja

When the 108 names of Mangal are chanted, participants repeat the names while keeping their ring and middle fingers on the sesame seeds. The camphor is lit and waved as Arati, a highly symbolic process.

Dipping the bilva leaf in the yellow liquid

Rahu Puja

The turmeric ball is kneaded into the shape of a snake with a raised hood to represent Rahu. When the 108 names of Rahu are chanted, abhishekha is done by dipping the bilva leaf in the yellow liquid and sprinkling it on the turmeric snake.
