The majority of Amrita University's School of Medicine is located at the university's Cochin campus, adjacent to AIMS, Amma's super-specialty hospital. The school offers an MBBS, as well as degrees in nursing, pharmacy, dentistry and ayurveda, the ancient Indian medical tradition.

MBBS Programme

The MBBS programme was launched in 2002 and quickly became one of the most in-demand insitutions for aspiring placement.

"What we are going for," says the college's principal, Dr. Vasudevan, "is not only to create excellent doctors but also, because this is Amma's institution, to instil in them a service-oriented mentality." Dr. Vaidhyanathan, who is currently heading AIMS' General & Vascular Surgery Department, agrees with his colleague. "Students should first become good human beings," he says. "We need to teach students a combination of modern technology and spirituality. I see it as the 'Three H's': head, hand and heart. In modern medicine, heart has been neglected for too long."

"The atmosphere here helps them realise the need for this," says Dr. P. Murugesan of the school's Physiology Department. "The classes are smaller here and this helps develop rapport between the students and teachers—small discussion groups of 16 to 20 students. Through this we can have more influence."

"Here things are different," says Dr. P.G. Nayar of the Pharmacology Department. I enjoy this atmosphere. It is all humility and kindness. And that is what we give our students. In one word, we give them the Amrita culture."
